Due to lack of in situations offering specially designed employment oriented courses, The Mahathma Eye Hospital is proposing Ophthalmic certificate courses in Ophthalmic Technology under the off-campus programme with the collaboration of Bharathidasan University to meet the greater demand for such qualified personnel both in Private and Public Sector Hospitals.
The Hospital Eye Care Services outpatient department has apart from general ophthalmology, sub-specialty clinics for Glaucoma, Retina-vitreous, Cornea, Squint, Contact Lenses, Neuro-Ophthalmology, Low Vision and Plastic Surgery with the state of the art investigative and management equipment, updated infrastructure, expertise, and sophisticated well-equipped operation theatres to perform wide range of surgeries.
Under its Outreach Programme with high volume, high quality, and low cost eye services, more than 5000 operations are done every year for the restoration of sight. Over 40,000 patients are treated annually for various eye aliments. Screening of 1,00,000 school children and about 100 eye consultative camps are conducted every year.
For Education and Training, the Hospital with such abundant clinical material, competent faculty, adequate infrastructure, a bed strength of 50 qualified staff, updated and essential equipment and teaching facilities is involved in manpower development of various categories of personnel from 1997. Since then, the Hospital has been training batches of ophthalmic technicians, ophthalmic nurses, camp organizers and other paramedical personnel.
